Note to self...

I learned a valuable lesson yesterday: be very, very careful when posting images "borrowed" off the internet onto your blog. I didn't realize that when you google images (e.g. "scary eyes") and use said photo that there may be copyright issues. Or at least a pissed off photographer who apparently feels possessive about his or her images and enjoys retaliating in passive aggressive ways.

I thought anything I found on google was free for the taking. Boy, was I wrong! Thankfully, my fellow blogger Jabbering Jaime alerted me to the fact that someone had removed the cute picture of animal eyes I'd added to my "Things that go rrrrr in the night" post and thoughtfully replaced it with a nice piece of gay porn. Which gave the title of my post a whole new meaning.

My apologies to anyone who might have been alarmed by the naughtiness! It wasn't intentional.

Ha! I wish you had left the pic--would go so well with the title, you're right!

Now you have me wondering....what exactly was in that picture?

Believe me, you don't want to know...

I used to be FURIOUS when people linked to my pictures, which often happened with my Indian film review website. The issue for me wasn't that they were scoffing something that I was responsible for, it was that they were simply LINKING the picture, so every time somebody viewed their link, a bit of my (very expensive) web hosting bandwidth was being eaten up without anybody knowing where the picture came from.

Rather than go the gay porn route, though, I'd just put big "WWW.DANGERMUFF.COM" text at the bottom of the image...because advertising is good! :)

Still, in these days of cheap bandwidth and free photo hosting that's hardly an issue. I know that Flickr has "free use" sections where photographers happily provide their pictures for other people to use...you can search in there for stuff.

Or, if you download a picture to your computer, just upload it to your Google post instead of linking to it, and the original owner shall never be the wiser.

Thanks for shedding some light on this curious subject, Muffy. And thanks for the tips! I guess I'm still a neophyte when it comes to blogging. But man...I'm learning things the hard way...
